How Tupac Shakur Murdered
Tupac Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight, the head of Death Row Records, went to the Bruce Seldon vs. Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of Knight’s friends, Trevon “Tre” Lane, a member of the Compton, California-based M.O.B. Pirus gang, saw Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, a member of the rival South Side Compton Crips gang, in the hallway of the MGM Grand after the match.
Anderson and a group of Southside Crips tried to rob Lane in a Foot Locker store at the Lakewood Center mall in Lakewood, California, in July 1996. Shakur struck Anderson in the hall after Lane told him. Shakur asked Anderson if he was from the “South” (Southside Crips) and then punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Anderson was attacked with the help of Shakur and Knight’s group. The fight, which was caught on video surveillance at the MGM Grand, was stopped by hotel security.
After the fight, Shakur went back to his hotel in Las Vegas, which was called the Luxor. He told his girlfriend, Kidada Jones, that he was in the Anderson fight, even though he had earlier promised to come back to her after going to the MGM Grand and leaving her in a car.
After changing clothes, Shakur left with Knight in a BMW sedan and went to Club 662, which Knight owned, to perform at a benefit show.
Shooting and aftermath
Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Bike Patrol stopped Shakur and Knight on Las Vegas Boulevard between 11 p.m. and 11:05 p.m. PDT because the car sound was too loud and they didn’t have license plates. The plates were found in Knight’s car’s trunk.
A few minutes later, the party was let go without being told why. At 11:10 p.m. (PDT), when they were stuck at a red light at the corner of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in front of the Maxim Hotel, a car with two women in it pulled up on their left side.
Shakur was talking to the two women through the window of his brand-new 1996 BMW 750iL. He asked them to go to Club 662. At 11:15 p.m. (PDT), a white late-model Cadillac with four doors and white paint pulled up to Knight’s right. The shooter was sitting in the back of the Cadillac.
He or she rolled down the window and quickly shot at Shakur’s BMW with a.40 S&W Glock 22. Shakur was hit in the chest twice, the arm once, and the leg once. Shakur was hit in the right lung by one of the shots. Pieces of the bomb hit Knight in the head.
Guarding Shakur was Frank Alexander said that when he was about to ride with Shakur in Knight’s car, Shakur asked him to drive Jones’s car instead, in case they needed more cars to get from Club 662 back to their hotel. Alexander said in his video, Before I Wake, that one of the cars in the group followed the attacker right after the attack, but he never heard from the people inside.
At the time of the killing, Yaki Kadafi was in the car behind Shakur with his protectors. He and the rest of the Death Row crew refused to help the police.
Even though Knight was hurt and his car had a flat tire, he was able to drive himself and Shakur a mile away, to the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue. Again, the Bike Patrol pulled them over, and they called ambulances over the radio. When cops and rescuers got to the scene, they took Knight and Shakur to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. They were stopped not far from the MGM Grand, where their night had started.
Gobi Rahimi, who was in charge of making music videos for Death Row and went to see Shakur in the hospital, later said that a Death Row marketing worker told him that the shooters had called the record company and threatened Shakur. Gobi told the Las Vegas police, but they said they didn’t have enough people to help.18: There were no attacks at the hospital. As he was being taken to the emergency room, Shakur said he was dying.
At the hospital, Shakur was highly drugged, put on life support machines, and eventually put into a medically-induced coma because he kept trying to get out of bed. Jones went to see him, and when she played “Vincent” by Don McLean on the CD player next to his bed, he woke up. Jones said that Shakur was moaning and that his eyes were full of “mucus and swollen.” Jones said that she loved Shakur.
Knight was freed from the hospital on September 8, the day after the killing, but he didn’t say anything until September 11. He told the police that on the night of the killing, he “heard something but didn’t see anything.” A spokesman for the police said that Knight’s comments didn’t help the case in any way. When Shakur was in the hospital, officers said they had no leads. During the week, Sgt. Kevin Manning said that Shakur’s group didn’t give police “a whole lot of cooperation.”
Rahimi and members of Shakur’s group Outlawz watched over him in the hospital because they were afraid that the person who shot him “was going to come finish him off.” Rahimi said that the Outlawz could have brought guns with them. Shakur died in the afternoon of Friday, September 13, 1996, in the intensive care unit. He had trouble breathing, which caused his heart to stop beating. Doctors tried to bring him back to life, but they couldn’t stop the bleeding. His mother, Afeni, chose to stop getting him medical care. At 4:03 p.m. (PDT), he was said to be dead.
In 2014, a police officer who said he was there when Shakur was shot said that Shakur wouldn’t say who did it. When the officer asked Shakur if he saw the person or people who shot him, Shakur said “Fuck you” as his last words to the officer. At the scene, there were paramedics and other cops, but neither Knight nor Alexander said they heard Shakur say those things.
